Dubai’s desert makes simple things difficult. Fine sand works into moving parts, summer heat pushes cooling systems hard, and an apparently flat site can hide soft patches that make moving heavy equipment awkward. A rig that is productive here has to be more than powerful; it has to be practical.

For UAE contractors, that middle ground can suit routine geotechnical drilling where mobility, SPT capability, sampling and moderate coring need to coexist. The exact model choice should be based on borehole depth, expected formations, tooling and the weight the company is comfortable transporting between sites.

MD600N: a step into deeper, multipurpose work
MetaDrill’s current brochure lists the MD600N as a geotechnical and water-well rig for surface exploration. It is rated for PQ to 250 m, HQ to 400 m and NQ to 600 m under suitable conditions, with 3 m rod handling and an optional automatic SPT hammer.
That combination explains why buyers looking for an MD600N for sale may be considering both geotechnical and exploration drilling. It has more depth and pullback capability than a compact site-investigation rig while retaining the ability to support SPT-based geotechnical programs.
The practical question is utilization. If most holes stop at 20 or 30 m, the MD600N may be more machine than you need. If the business regularly moves into deep core work, water wells or exploration, that additional envelope can become commercially useful.
MD1000N: when deep coring becomes the job
The MD1000N is the heavier deep-capacity option in the current lineup. MetaDrill’s brochure rates it to PQ 400 m, HQ 600 m and NQ 1,000 m under suitable conditions, with a 256 HP prime mover and 12,000 kgf pull-up capacity.
That puts the machine into a different operating category from compact urban rigs. Long exploration holes, deep geotechnical coring and water-well programs place more emphasis on stable feed, rod handling, pullback and the ability to keep production moving as the string becomes heavier.
Exploration drill rigs also spend longer on each setup, so maintenance access and support become crucial. A deep rig that stops for a small unavailable part can strand an expensive crew and support spread.
What about coastal and marine work?
A desert-focused fleet still needs to think about Dubai’s coast. Reclaimed developments, ports and waterfront infrastructure can involve high groundwater, saline exposure and soft access conditions. Crawler stability and a controlled drilling system are important, but maintenance changes too.
After coastal work, rigs should be cleaned carefully to reduce salt-related corrosion around fasteners, electrical connectors and hidden surfaces. Pumps, casing and borehole-support equipment should be configured for unstable saturated materials where needed.
The useful point is that one UAE fleet can see both extremes in the same month: dry desert dust inland and saline moisture at the coast. Equipment design and maintenance routines need to cope with both.
Buying for the GCC, not only Dubai
MetaDrill’s website highlights projects and users in Saudi Arabia as well as the UAE. That reflects the way regional contractors operate. A rig bought in Sharjah may end up working on a Saudi infrastructure program, an Omani investigation or a remote exploration site.
