Before contacting a dealer or manufacturer, define the work the rig must earn its keep doing. A compact geotech drill rig used for urban environmental borings has a different job than a crawler-mounted unit drilling deep infrastructure investigations in glacial till.

I’d also ask what the current fleet can’t do.

The advertised price is not the project budget. For a fair comparison, build a landed-and-ready-to-drill number for every option.

Most contractors use one of five routes: cash, a conventional equipment loan, a lease, manufacturer or dealer financing, or a government-supported business loan. The right fit depends on cash reserves, tax advice, credit profile, utilization, and how long you plan to retain the machine. 

Conventional equipment loan 

An equipment loan usually gives the buyer ownership while the lender takes a security interest in the rig. A down payment may be required, and the loan term often reflects the machine’s expected useful life and resale value. 

Dealer Purchase or Factory-Direct Import? 

Both routes can work. The distinction is who absorbs the coordination and compliance burden. 

Buying through a North American dealer 

A capable dealer can provide local inspection, trade-in support, financing introductions, commissioning, warranty administration, training, parts stocking, and a technician who understands the machine. That support has a price, but it can be cheap insurance for a contractor whose rig must work Monday morning. 

Buying direct from the manufacturer 

Factory-direct purchasing may offer a lower base price, greater configuration flexibility, and more direct technical communication. It also shifts more responsibility to the buyer. 

Importing a Drill Rig Into the United States 

For US imports, involve a licensed customs broker and confirm the rig’s engine status before making a non-refundable payment. 

EPA regulates the importation of nonroad engines and equipment. Its guidance explains that engine classes introduced into US commerce require a valid Certificate of Conformity for the applicable model year. Buyers should obtain the engine family, model year, emissions label photos, and certificate information from the seller, then confirm the import pathway. 

Importing a Drill Rig Into Canada 

Canadian buyers need a business/import setup, tariff classification, valuation, origin documentation, and a plan for duties and taxes. The federal government’s commercial import guidance lays out the preparation, classification, shipping, reporting, and release process.

The Dealer Questions That Reveal Real Support 

Dealer promises sound similar until you make them measurable. Ask: 

  1. How many units of this exact model operate in the United States or Canada? 

  1. Which parts are stocked locally, and which are factory-order only? 

  1. What is the normal response time for field service in our operating area? 

  1. Who handles warranty labor, travel, freight, and diagnostic time? 

  1. Is remote diagnostic support available during our working hours? 

One of my favorite checks is the parts test: send the dealer a list of ten ordinary wear or failure items and ask for price, stock status, and delivery time. 

Calculate Cost per Productive Day 

The strongest comparison converts each option into a cost per productive drilling day. Include annual debt or lease payments, insurance, scheduled maintenance, estimated repairs, transport effects, operator training, and expected downtime. 

Then account for output. A more expensive rig may drill faster, mobilize with one truck instead of two, or avoid subcontracting rock work. Those gains can outweigh the payment difference. 

  • Conservative: slow utilization, higher repairs, and delayed project starts 

If the deal only works in the strong caseit’s probably too tight. 

Final Purchase Checklist 

  • The rig is sized for the actual drilling program 

  • All options and tooling are listed by part number or clear description 

  • The total budget includes freight, taxes, duties, brokerage, training, and spares 

  • Financing terms have been reviewed under conservative utilization 

  • Engine and import documentation has been checked by qualified professionals 

  • Transport dimensions and weights work with the planned truck and permits

How much parts inventory should I buy with a new geotech drill rig? 

At minimum, stock routine service filters and the wear or failure items that could stop drilling but are easy to replace in the field. Add model-specific seals, sensors, hoses, and service kits based on dealer lead times. Remote projects justify a deeper shelf than work performed near a stocked service branch. 

What’s the most important dealer comparison? 

Response capability in your territory. A dealer’s national footprint is less useful than knowing who will answer, what parts are nearby, and how quickly a technician can reach your rig.
